Introduction

My name is Laura Sherman and I am a senior at Michigan State University. I am studying elementary education with a focus in language arts and I will be graduating in May. I am very interested in diverse literature because I will be teaching children throughout my career with the use of literature. I have not been exposed to a wide range of literature that deals with pressing issues in society. I am extremely excited to explore the course literature and become informed about how such literature is perceived in the schools around the country. Diverse topics often cause controversey and I am curious to find out how it is dealt with as well as the problems that are arising from such diversity. I am a large supporter of freedom of speech, and I am open to reading and discussing any topic this course introduces to me as I believe literature can not and should not be sensored or ignored for fear of the realities in the world today.
